Report on the state of the art

A report on the state of the art provides you with information about technical solutions that are already known in the field of your product development project. The report is drawn up by using patent publications from all around the world. At the start of the product development process, it gives you useful information about the latest technology in the field, about the technical problems and how they have been solved.

The report also gives you an initial picture of what trend you should follow and which part of the technology is already protected by patents.

Patents equal technology: 80-90% of new technical solutions are published in patents, and often only there. There are about 40 million patent publications describing 15 million inventions, and the number of publications increases by almost a million each year.

Cost effective R&D requires that all relevant technical solutions should be taken into account as the starting point for the development process. Reports show that up to 30–50% of R&D overlaps with previous research.
