Contents of the database

Searches by application number produce all basic data on pending national applications. The mark, the reason for and date of ending the examination are displayed of applications that have been withdrawn, dismissed, rejected or rejected on account of opposition. No data is available under the application number on applications the examination of which has been ended before the adoption of the computerized system (1 April 1993).

Searches by registration number produce all basic data on valid national registrations. Of marks removed from the register, the mark and the reason for and date of removal from the register are displayed. The database contains no data on marks removed from the Register before 1 April 1994.

Searches by international registration number produce data on international registrations under the Madrid Protocol designating Finland. Basic data will be displayed on registrations which are being processed by us and on registrations accepted as valid in Finland. The mark and the reason for and date of removal/completed processing will be displayed of registrations which have been processed during the processing phase or removed from the list after being accepted.

Please note: The data on international registrations are unofficial. WIPO keeps the actual register and provides further details of international registrations in its Madrid Express database.

Word searches involve pending national applications and valid national registrations. They also involve international registrations designating Finland which are being processed or are accepted as valid in Finland.

At the first stage of a search by client, all clients are sought that meet the search criterion. From among the marks of the client which is chosen from the list obtained, those that will appear on the list are the valid national registrations and the pending national applications. Searches by clients regarding international registrations can be conducted in WIPO’s Madrid Express database.

Please note: Finding no identical mark in a word search is no guarantee that the mark concerned is eligible for registration. The register may contain marks which either as to their way of writing or phonetic form are close enough to form an obstacle. There may also be other obstacles to registration - additional information on conditions for registration you will find for instance here.

Clarifications in respect of the information contained in the fields

Status: A national application is either

  • pending
  • withdrawn
  • dismissed
  • rejected or
  • rejected on account of an opposition (with applications published before 1 April 1996).

A national registered trademark is either

  • registered (in which case the period for filing an opposition has expired and the opposition proceedings, if any, are over)
  • registered, the period for filing an opposition will end + date (displayed as long as the opposition period is running)
  • registered, opposition proceedings under way (period for filing an opposition has expired, an opposition has been filed and the proceedings are under way) or
  • removed from the register (the reason for and date of removal also displayed).

An international registration is either

  • pending in Finland
  • valid in Finland
  • Accepted as valid in Finland; period for filing an opposition ends
  • Accepted as valid in Finland; opposition proceedings under way
  • not valid in Finland; rejected
  • not valid in Finland; no reply to notification of refusal
  • not valid in Finland; dismissed
  • not valid in Finland; withdrawn
  • not valid in Finland; not renewed
  • not valid in Finland; rejected on account of an opposition

The mark: In the case of word marks the words or in the case of device marks the device contained in the mark.

Date of application: The filing date of the application, with EU conversion applications the filing date with OHIM, with applications based on an international registration the date of the international registration/subsequent designation and with divisional applications the filing date of the basic application (in the case of applications with the date of receipt differing from the filing date, you can see the date of receipt in Transactions).

Priority date: The earliest priority date is displayed. The priority may also be directed at part of the goods and the number of priorities may also be higher than one.

Classes of goods/services: The numbers of the classes and a link to the lists of goods/services appear on the screen.

Depending on the language of the application, the lists concerning national applications or registrations are either in Finnish or in Swedish. If no goods/services are listed in the field of the list of goods/services, it covers all the goods/services in the class. However, the absence of goods/services in the applications may result from the classification not being established so far.

The lists concerning international registrations are in English and are never empty. Before 1999, lists of goods/services were not entered in the database, and all of them are not yet included. In such case, the text “Not available” will appear instead of the list.

The last column on the list, “Page”, is displayed for technical reasons only.

Transactions: Transactions taken place during the national application process and those relating to any opposition proceedings in respect of a national registration. Regarding international registrations, transactions taken place during the application process or transactions relating to any opposition proceedings, as well as all correspondence between WIPO and our office, including notifications from WIPO on transfer, renewal etc.
