Rising trend in national trademark applications continues
By the end of June, a total of 2110 new trademark applications had been filed with the National Board of Patents and Registration (NBPR), which means a rise of about 10 per cent over the same period last year. In contrast, the number of international registrations designating Finland under the Madrid Protocol was slightly below 800 applications, which is about 10 per cent less than the previous year.
However, despite the decline in the number of international registrations designating Finland, the combined demand for these two groups showed an increase of almost four per cent in the past six months. This is noteworthy, because the total number of new national applications and international registrations designating Finland has shown a steady downward trend since 2001.
Electronic trademark applications have gained popularity steadily. In the period from January to June, over 45 per cent of trademark applications were filed electronically.
We have managed to keep the average handling time for applications in less than five months.
You can easily search for information about valid and pending trademarks from the NBPR trademark database. At the end of 2010, our Trademark Register contained slightly more than 76,000 valid trademarks.
