10,000th utility model granted
On 19 March 2013, the National Board of Patents and Registration (NBPR) granted utility model nr 10,000 to Dir-Air Oy for an air controller used to ventilate rooms. Like the patent, the utility model is an exclusive right granted for a new product or device that differs in its essentials from known inventions. In Finland, utility models have been granted since 1992.
According to Dir-Air Oy, the new air controller is easier to install than other solutions, it can be changed without tools and the production process is simple. The idea of the air controller is first to draw air from outside between the window panes, and then to warm up the air before releasing it into the room, thus preventing cold air entering the room.
The utility model is a quick way to protect the results of product development. Utility models are registered much faster than patents, within a few months, and can be in force for as much as 10 years (4+4+2). The holder of a utility model is entitled to forbid others from using the invention professionally. Professional use includes making, selling, using or importing the product protected by a utility model.
