How to renew a registration

The term of protection of a utility model registration is four years from the filing date. You can request that the registration be renewed first for a period of four years and then for a period of two years. The term of protection can therefore be up to ten years from the filing date.

You renew a registration by paying a renewal fee into the bank account of National Board of Patents and Registration, see price list.

The renewal fee has to be paid no later than four years after the filing date. It can also, however, be paid one year before that date. If the renewal fee is paid six months after that date, a higher fee will be collected.

Example: You file a utility model application on 4 May 2000. You have to renew the registration for the first time on 4 May 2004, but you can also do it already on 4 May 2003. If you do not renew the registration until on 4 November 2004, you have to pay a higher renewal fee.
