National patent applications

Finnish applicant = patent applications received by the NBPR from Finnish applicants

International patent applications (PCT)

PCT phase I (ISA) = PCT applications that have been the subject of a novelty search at the NBPR

PCT phase II (IPEA) = PCT applications that have been the subject of a preliminary examination of patentability at the NBPR

Granted patents

Granted patents (tot.) = patents granted by the NBPR

Finnish applicant = patents granted by the NBPR to Finnish applicants

Patents in force in Finland

Granted by NBPR = patents granted by the NBPR, which are in force at the end of the year

Granted by EPO = patents granted by the European Patent Office (EPO), which have been validated in Finland and are in force at the NBPR at the end of the year

Please note: Finland acceded to the European Patent Convention on 1 March 1996, which allows the EPO to grant patents which are then validated in Finland. Patents granted by the EPO are not automatically in force in Finland – the applicant must validate the patent in Finland after the grant by filing a translation of the patent and by paying a publication fee.

Average life span (years)

Granted by NBPR = average life span of patents granted by the NBPR

Granted by EPO = average life span of patents granted by the EPO and validated in Finland
