120 Years of Trademark Protection in Finland (4 June–15 December 2009)

In February 1889, Emperor and Grand Duke Alexander III issued a decree on the protection of trademarks in Finland with the consent and approval of the Finnish estates.

On 1 May 1889, the first entries were made in the Finnish Trademark Register when the trademarks of Finnish ironworks and metal works were registered ex officio as provided in the decree. The trademark of Billnäs works for spike iron and iron rod was registered as trademark No 1. On the same day, the Industrial Board received its first trademark applications.

This was the beginning of a long and continuous history of the Finnish national Trademark Register. On 1 May 2009, a total of 190,171 marks had been entered in the register, of which 77,529 were still valid.

The exhibition at the NBPR’s Innogallery provides an outline of the history and present state of trademarks, explains the purpose of trademarks and clarifies the effects of registration.
