Changes to Patent Regulations and Utility Model Regulations from 1 March 2019

The Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH) has adopted new Patent Regulations and Utility Model Regulations. We included technical changes in the regulations due to our electronic application process. We also complemented the Utility Model Regulations in line with the Patent Regulations in certain respects.

We made the following kind of changes:

  • the time limit for a patent holder to reply after an opposition is now four months instead of six months to speed up the opposition proceedings
  • small linguistic changes
  • the Patent Regulations and Utility Model Regulations were harmonised
  • special orders concerning biological material in sections 9, 10, 24 and 25 in the Patent Regulations were also included in chapter 2 in the Utility Model Regulations
  • the paragraphs of the Utility Model Regulations were re-numbered

The new regulations enter into force on 1 March 2019 and will be published on the PRH website on that date. The Utility Model Regulations will only be published in Finnish and in Swedish.
