The new Finnish Trademark Act will enter into force on 1 May 2019

The Finnish President has approved the new Finnish Trademarks Act today. The Act will enter into force on 1 May 2019.

Due to the new Trademarks Act, the Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH) will introduce updated versions of the online trademark application and the online renewal application, and two completely new online services. All the services will become available on 2 May 2019, the first working day after the Act has entered into force. The two completely new online services are in Finnish and in Swedish only, and they are:

  • Application about a Registered Trademark, which you can use for example to inform us about a change of owner or the specification of your list of goods and services, to file an opposition, or to apply for administrative revocation.
  • Response or Addition to an Application or Opposition, which you can use for example to complete your pending application or opposition, to respond to an office action, or to apply for an extension.

The new Act will bring about the following changes:

  • You can only apply for or renew a trademark online.
  • You no longer have to provide a graphic representation of your trademark.
  • Your application can also be in English.
  • You will have to follow tighter requirements for an application to become pending.
  • In certain cases, you have the opportunity to specify your old list of goods and services.
  • You can also apply for the revocation or invalidation of a trademark at the PRH.
