General information about design rights

What is a design right?

A new design is protected by a design right that protects the appearance of the product. In other words, it protects the visual design that makes your product new and unique. This could be a shape, pattern or detail, such as the shape of a stylish lamp, a unique coffee cup, or a fashionable bag. When you register your design, you secure yourself an exclusive right to the products you have designed.

Why should you protect your new design?

Because your idea is worth it! When the design right is registered, you can prevent others from copying or exploiting your design without permission. At the same time, you strengthen your brand and show your customers that it is a unique, well-considered design – not an inferior article.

A design right can bring a competitive advantage: it allows you to stand out in the market and focus on your business. If someone violates your exclusive right or copies your product, you have the means to intervene: a registered design right. Do you want to risk leaving your creativity unprotected?

Design rights are mainly used in business, although a private person may also apply for and hold a design right.
