PRH open data

The Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH) has launched an open data service enabling you to search, browse and download the following data in a machine-readable format for free:

  • data from the Finnish Trade Register’s public notices, and
  • data from the Finnish Business Information System (BIS) maintained by the PRH and the Finnish Tax Administration.

Currently, data are available only about the following company or business types, and no email addresses are included:

  • limited liability companies
  • public limited companies
  • insurance companies
  • public insurance companies
  • housing companies
  • co-operatives

The main purpose of the PRH open data is to enable you to retrieve and then modify the data in other applications or systems. Please note that if you are just an occasional user, it is easier to make searches using the Finnish Trade Register's published entries search or the BIS company search than using this service.

Data from the Finnish Trade Register’s public notices

Public notices contain business details listed on the register on a certain day – new businesses or companies registered, for example – or information about new businesses or companies registered in a certain municipality in Finland. Changes in businesses or companies are also published through public notices, for instance if the board of directors has changed. You also get access to the headings of the register entries, such as board of directors, place of registered office, or increase of share capital.

Data from Finnish Business Information System (BIS)

The open data interface provides data from the Finnish Business Information System (BIS) maintained by the PRH and the Finnish Tax Administration. Data are available about the following company or business types: limited liability companies, public limited companies, housing companies, co-operatives, insurance companies, or public insurance companies. In addition to basic details of businesses or companies registered at the Finnish Trade Register, the service also provides information on other registers they have been added to: the Prepayment Register, the Employer Register, the VAT Register, the register of bodies liable for tax on insurance premiums, and the Client Register of the Tax Administration.

FAQ on open data

Who is open data for?

The main purpose of the PRH open data is to enable you to retrieve and then process the data in other applications or systems. You can run selections or use PRH open data as data content in your services.

Please note that if you are just an occasional user, it is easier to make searches using the Finnish Trade Register's published entries search or the BIS company search than using this service.

Why are data made open?

Open data speed up the use of data, and help you to develop new services and businesses. You can combine various types of data in your services. Here are some possible uses:

  • you can run selections
  • you can link your online shop to open data to check whether a customer has registered for VAT, or
  • you can produce new services from open data.

Are there any disadvantages of open data?

Open data may have negative effects – information service providers may have varying kinds of information about the same company, even data that is out-of-date, depending on how often the service providers update their databases. Some company directory services update their data by phone for a fee. Businesses must therefore be very careful in updating their information for such purposes.

The PRH is not liable for the data content of directory services provided by other parties even if the PRH open data have been quoted as the source of information. We recommend that you contact the service provider and ask them to remove data that are out-of-date.

When are PRH open data available?

The technical interface in this service can be used 24/7 every day of the year. The data are updated once a day, and include updates made the day before.

You use the open data interface at your own risk. The PRH provides the interface ‘as is’ without guarantee of any kind, and it is not liable for the operation of applications using the interface. The PRH undertakes technical maintenance and provides technical support during office hours.

Open data glossary

Open data: Open data can be reused freely by anyone, in a machine-readable format, and without paying any fee.

Machine readability, technical availability: Data in machine-readable format enables software to easily identify, recognise and select details from it.

Open information resources: Open information resources mean that public data are provided in a machine-readable format freely available for reuse. Note that this does not apply to confidential data or if the use of data is restricted by law. Researchers or authorities may also get restricted access to information resources, but that is not open data in the true sense of the word.

Reuse of data: Reuse of data means that natural or legal persons use public sector documents for commercial or non-commercial purposes that are different from the original public purpose for which the documents were originally produced. In practice, reuse of data means that data are being combined with other data contents, or other contents, or that new services are being produced from the data.

Data from public notices: data content

Our open data interface provides data from public notices of registrations made at the Finnish Trade Register (Finnish business register) starting from 7 November 2014. No details will be shown of businesses or companies that were dissolved before 29 August 2014. Data are available about the following company or business types:

  • the headings of register entries; such as board of directors, place of registered office, or increase of share capital; and the date of registration.

The data are updated once a day, and you can retrieve public notices of registrations made the day before.

You can use a Business ID as a search term, or you can restrict your search by type of notification, place of registered office, or the date and time of registration.

The data are updated once a day, and you can retrieve BIS data updated the day before.

Data are only available about existing businesses and organisations. You can search for one company or business at a time by using a Business ID as a search term. You can also restrict your search by date of registration to retrieve new Business IDs given the day before, for instance, or by the first part (prefix) of a company name to retrieve companies or other entities starting, for example, with ‘Plumb’. You can also restrict your search by the total number of search results or by using other search criteria.
