Search instructions

Basic search

On the start page of the service, you can search for designs by typing any of the following search criteria in the search field:

  • Indication of the product
  • When searching by indication of the product, you can truncate your search terms by using the symbol * (e.g. begin*, *mid*, *end) and combine them with the operators AND, OR and NOT. The standard operator is AND, meaning that the search will only return designs matching all the search terms. To search for an exact phrase, use quotation marks around the words (e.g. “smart navi").
  • Application number of the design
  • The application number of a Finnish national design registration (e.g. M20190700), or the application number given by the PRH to an international registration designating Finland (e.g. DW20190700). You can enter several application numbers separated by a space.
  • Registration number of the design
  • The registration number of a Finnish national design registration, or of an international registration designating Finland (e.g. DM/085475).
  • Submission reference
  • The submission reference given by the PRH and written on the submission receipt of an online design application (e.g. FIDS201900012345678).

All designs in the information service are included in the search.

Search with special characters

When searching by name of the holder (owner), designer or representative, use the Latin alphabet. The search equates the most common Latin letters containing accents or other diacritics to the basic characters of the Latin alphabet. We recommend, however, that you only use letters found in the Finnish alphabet for your search. Diacritics include the domestic characters å, ä and ö and some foreign characters, such as é and ü.

  • Examples:
  • The letter ä is grouped with a. If you search for väri, the word vari is also retrieved.
  • The letter e is grouped with é. If you search for rose, the word rosé is also retrieved.

Search for all designs with a certain status

If you want to retrieve all designs with a certain status, run an empty search: just click on “Search" for the basic or advanced search without entering any search criteria. The search will return all the designs included in the information service, and you can filter the results, for example, to display only designs with an ongoing opposition period. You can filter the search results by clicking on “Filter and sort". When using a mobile device, click on the icon on the right above the search results to use the filters.

Advanced search

You can search for designs by the following details:

  • Indication of the product
  • Classes of goods
  • Application number
  • Registration number
  • Submission reference
  • Applicant or holder (owner)
  • Representative
  • Designer
  • Business ID
  • Application date
  • Registration date
  • Publication date

You can make the advanced search cover all designs or only those that are either pending or registered. The standard setting is that all designs are included in the search.

When searching by indication of the product, you can truncate your search terms by using the symbol * (e.g. begin*, *mid*, *end) and combine them with the operators AND, OR and NOT. The standard operator is AND, meaning that the search will only return designs matching all the search terms. To search for an exact phrase, use quotation marks around the words (e.g. “smart navi").

Search by class if you want to retrieve the details of designs in a specific class of goods (e.g. 1-01).

When searching by name of the holder, representative or designer, or by indication of the product, you can truncate your search terms by using the symbol * (e.g. begin*, *mid*, *end) and combine them with the operators OR, AND and NOT. The standard operator is OR, meaning that the search will return all designs matching any of the search terms. To search for an exact name, use quotation marks around the words. For example, a search for “X-Magazines Ltd" will only return trademarks where X-Magazines Ltd is the applicant or holder. A search for X-Magazines Ltd will return registrations where either ‘X’ or ‘Magazines’ or ‘Ltd’ is included in the applicant/holder details.

You can enter several search criteria, and the search will return designs matching all your criteria. For more information about the search fields in the service, click on the question mark next to the field.

If you want to go back and change you criteria after the search, click on “Modify search" above the search results.

Search results

  • The number of designs shown in the search results is 3,000 maximum. You will also see the total number of designs matching your search in the database. There are three different options to view the search results. Select between the options by using the icons for display settings above the results.
  • Card view: Display the results in a card view. In this view, each design matching your search criteria is displayed in a separate card.
  • Table view: Display the results in a table. The table view is arranged in rows by design application, with each row specifying the designs included in the respective application. This option is not available on mobile devices due to their restricted display size.
  • Image grid: Only the images included in the search results are displayed. Please note that secret designs are indicated by “No image or the image is secret".
  • You can sort and filter the search results by clicking on “Filter and sort". When using a mobile device, click on the icon on the right above the search results to use the filters.
  • Sorting arranges the displayed search results in an ascending or descending order alphabetically or by date, according to what you select.
  • Use the filters to limit the search results by design status. Unlike sorting, filtering applies to the entire set of search results and not only to the results displayed. This means you can use the filters to refine your search, for example when there are more results than the maximum number to be displayed (3,000 results). If needed, select “Clear" to clear the filters. Running a new search will also always clear the filters.
  • In the filter menu, design statuses are listed under two separate headings: “Status of registered or pending designs" and “Status of not valid designs". Click on a heading to select all the statuses under it at the same time.
  • If you want to hide the menu for “Filter and sort", click on the button again, or the icon if you are using a mobile device.
  • The filter button turns purple when filters are active.
  • To see detailed information about a design in the search results, click on the image or application number of the design. It is also possible to open a new tab in your browser for the details of the individual designs you are interested in.
  • How to download the results, for example to Excel:
      • You can download the displayed search results as a CSV file. The file contains 3,000 design applications maximum. The character set of the file is encoded using the Unicode UTF-8 standard, and different data fields are separated by a semicolon. If you open the file in a spreadsheet program and, for example, Scandinavian characters are not showing correctly, read the instructions for your software on how to open CSV files encoded in UTF-8.

Search tips

Classification of goods

  • Designs are categorised into classes under the international Locarno Agreement. There are 32 main classes. Each main class is divided into as many subclasses as needed. For example, the main class for furniture is 6. The subclass for tables is 03 and for cupboards 04. This means you should search by 6-03 for tables, and by 6-04 for cupboards.

Applications, appeals and oppositions concerning designs

  • The detailed information for each design includes a list of applications, appeals and oppositions concerning the design application or registration. Their details are not shown in the information service.
