EPO study: Finland among the top five European countries in patent applications related to quantum technology
According to a study by the European Patent Office (EPO) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the operating environment for quantum technology is now expanding rapidly: new companies are entering, investments are increasing, and innovation is growing significantly.
According to a study by the EPO and OECD with the title "Mapping the global quantum ecosystem", Finland is among the OECD member states that invest the most in quantum technology. In Finland, there are already over ten leading companies in the field.
Finland is also among the world leaders in patenting quantum technology:
- According to the study by the EPO and OECD, Finland ranks fourth in Europe in patent applications related to quantum technology.
- The Finnish company IQM Finland Oy is among the top 20 companies in the world in terms of patent applications for quantum computing.
- Finland's share of international quantum technology patent families was about two per cent between 2020 and 2024. It has almost doubled compared to the period 2015–2019.
