PRH director Jorma Hanski elected as Chairperson of EUIPO Management Board

Jorma Hanski, the Director of Patents and Trademarks at the Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH), has been elected as Chairperson of the Management Board of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), starting from 1 January 2019. Mr Hanski will hold the four-year mandate until the end of 2022.

EUIPO registers EU trademarks and Community designs, which are valid throughout the European Union. The Office incorporates Boards of Appeal and the European Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights, which works to promote discussion, research and communication related to infringements of intellectual property rights.

With about 1000 employees and an annual turnover of more than 400 million euros, EUIPO is one of the biggest separate bodies of the EU.

The EUIPO Management Board has a number of duties including supervising the operations of the Office, approving the long-term strategy and the annual work programme, and preparing decisions of appointment for the top positions of the Office and the Boards of Appeal. The Executive Director of EUIPO reports to the Management Board.
