PRH Director General Antti Riivari continues as chair of EPO Committee on Patent Law

Antti Riivari, Director General of the Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH), has been re-elected as chair of the Committee on Patent Law at the European Patent Office (EPO) for a term of three years, starting on 1 April 2021.

The Committee on Patent Law comes under the EPO Administrative Council. The committee advises the Administrative Council on any legal matters concerning the European Patent Convention or the implementation of the convention. The committee also handles any proposal relating to the amendment of the European Patent Convention and advises the Administrative Council on matters concerning the international patent system if they affect the European Patent Convention.

“The main task of the Committee on Patent Law is to maintain the EPO’s regulatory framework. Constantly evolving technologies, such as inventions based on artificial intelligence and plant patents, are challenging the principles of patent regulations. On global level, the harmonisation of patent regulations has not made any progress for some time. These issues will be on the committee‘s agenda in the next couple of years," Mr Riivari says.
